Yerba Mate comes from the South American evergreen bush, Illex paraguayensis. Because the berries were found to have high amounts of caffeine, it was a popular caffeinated drink before the coffee industry entered Latin America, and has approximately the same amount of caffeine as mild Arabica coffee. The novelty of this drink warranted the nickname, “The drink of the gods.”
